Church LifeGraduation RecognitionGraduation is a time of celebration. BUMC would like to recognize all of the students (high school or college) who will graduate this spring. For students who are local, we will be taking photos that we'll use in the Banner, in the Church Office from 9:45 to 10:15 a.m. on Sunday May 11 and 18. Please call the church office and let the staff know that your daughter or son will be graduating and from which school. Noah's Ark RegistrationNoah's Ark Preschool began registration for the 2008- 2009 school year in January. Classes are available for children ages 2 through 6, and new this year is an extended day (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.) Kindergarten. For information or to arrange a tour, please call Mary Bradley at 847-844-3738. Important Announcement!A security system has been installed in the Administrative Office area. During normal office hours, 8:30 a.m. till 4 p.m. on weekdays (1 p.m. on Fridays during the summer), the alarm will be disarmed. Additionally, the alarm will not be activated during scheduled meetings or appointments with any of the staff. If the door is unlocked you can enter. However, if the door is locked, even if you have a key, you will trip the alarm. All four doors leading into the office area are part of the system, so opening any of them will trip the alarm and require entering a code to avoid a service call from the local police. We will expect anyone tripping the alarm to pay the service call. Worship2008 DisciplinesThese books of daily devotions are available in the church office for $12. They are printed in "enlarged type" for easy reading. These texts are self-study. Adult Ministry Study and FellowshipThe latest Adult Ministry opportunities are listed on the Adult Ministries page. Volunteers are sought for crafting an eye catching BUMC display at the Barrington Area Library this July! Please contact Kim Albrecht if you are interested. Tanzania School SuppliesPete Wesley gave an excellent presentation of our Foods Resource Bank Program in March during a Chili Supper sponsored by the Missions Ministry Group. Pete's son, Mannis (some know him by "Petey") is in the Peace Corps in Tanzania. We collected money for Bibles (in Swahili) for the church he attends and also found out that the children in the area school have NO PAPER and must SHARE pencils! Therefore the Missions Ministry Group is asking members of the church to bring school supplies of all types (notebook paper, pens, pencils, markers, construction paper, books, etc) to church. You will find a special receptacle in the Narthex marked "TANZANIA"). For more information, please contact Kiran Frey, Co-Chair of the Missions Ministry Group. Habitat for HumanityPlease note the new display in the Narthex illustrating our church's involvement in Habitat for Humanity. We are part of a coalition of Barrington Area churches (Joyful Hands Partnership), now about to embark on the construction of our 4th Habitat home in Carpentersville. You can sign up to help in the construction (which will start on April 5) or discover other ways to help out. Financial contributions are also welcome as our church will contribute $5,000 toward our share of the program (make checks payable to Barrington United Methodist Church and write Habitat in the ledger). Please contact Robert Vickery, our Missions liaison to Joyful Hands Partnership if you have any questions. Praise God Through MusicIf you would like to provide instrumental music in the Rotunda after one or both services on a 2nd Sunday of the month, please contact Karen Maxwell to be scheduled. Tanzania Orphanage ProjectThrough a friend, Joyce Strout has learned of an orphanage in Tanzania that would appreciate summer weight baby clothing for ages birth up through toddler and small children sizes. She plans on sending a charity box each quarter to Tanzania that will include clothing, medical supplies, and other supplies for basic living. For more information, contact Joyce Strout. Collect Campbell's Soup LabelsCold January weather leads to warm, comforting meals --like soup! Don't forget to save Campbell's UPC codes for Marcy Newberry. Over 100,000 UPS codes were sent by the Northern Illinois Conference UMW. They are redeemed for items such as books, playground equipment, computer software and other items needed by Marcy Newberry. It's an easy way to help! Just cut out the UPC codes from Campbell's products (soups, gravies, pork and beans, etc.) as well as those from Pepperidge Farms, Swanson and Franco American brands. PLEASE NOTE: No longer are we turning in the front labels, now we need the UPC codes from the back of the label. Thanks for your help and participation! Woodlawn - Drivers NeededOn the first Tuesday of each month, BUMC provides food for the community kitchen in the First Presbyterian Church in the Woodlawn Neighborhood in Chicago. We need drivers to deliver the food to the church. The church is located at about 63rd St. South and east of I-94. This mission is greatly appreciated and help is available to unload your vehicle. If you would like to learn more about these important topics and how you can make a difference, please mark your calendar and plan to attend the next UMW General Meeting, Thursday, May 15 at 10:30. Our guest speaker will be Karen Hewitson. Karen, long active in UMW, is presently NI Conference UMW president. She is one of 24 individuals chosen three years ago to be a part of the "Green Team," a program activating local United Methodist Women members to work on environmental issues in their communities. The Bible sends a strong message that being faithful requires just and right relationships with God, other human beings and with the rest of creation. Likewise, the United Methodist Church's Social Principles and numerous General Conference resolutions call for sound stewardship of the earth and environmentally friendly lifestyles that preserve creation for the benefit of present and future generations. She will be focusing on water, but will address other environmental issues. Lunch will follow. All are welcome! (men, too!) For childcare, please RSVP to Linda Osikowicz by May 8.
