Church LifeCare Providers NetworkAre you responsible for the care of your parent or a loved one? Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed by the awesome responsibility? Have you been a caregiver and could offer ideas and support to others? The majority of us will be caregivers at some time in our lives and are ill prepared for the job. If you would like to be a member of a group who will share ideas and information, ask for and offer advice, share experiences, pray, cry and laugh together please let me know. Formation of this group depends on responses received. WorshipOpportunities in MusicCalling ALL musicians: Do you sing? Do you play an instrument? Are you between 10 and 90 years old? Karen Maxwell, our Director of Music, would like to be in touch with you. Stop by the Welcome Table and fill out a BUMC Music Registration Form. Leave it in the church office, hand it to an usher or Karen . . . we would like to make use of the voices and instruments that God has placed in our congregation. Needed: 13 Good BeardsKaren Maxwell would like to stage a tableau of The Last Supper on April 1. This would be part of our Holy Thursday service. However, this would require participation by 13 men with facial hair. These aren't speaking parts. Volunteers would just sit or stand as Scripture is read. Adult Ministry Study and FellowshipThe latest Adult Ministry opportunities are listed on the Adult Ministries page. Copies of the Adult Ministries Curriculum are now available on the Welcome table in the Narthex. Praise God Through MusicIf you would like to provide instrumental music in the Rotunda after one or both services on a 2nd Sunday of the month, please contact Karen Maxwell to be scheduled. Prayers - Presence - Gifts - ServiceHealth Kits for HaitiUMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief ) currently has aid workers on the site in Haiti and they have asked that those concerned send "Health Kits". The UMC Northern Illinois Conference has arranged for transportation to Haiti for the health kits. However, they have asked that we forward BULK items instead of individual health kits. If individual health kits are sent, each item would have to be inspected separately. It is much easier to assemble the kits from a centralized location and package them directly for shipping to Haiti. We are asking that each church collect bulk items individually to be delivered (or picked up) by BUMC on March 19th, 20th, and 21st. BUMC will have the materials delivered to the assembly and packaging center (Markham, IL) on March 22nd. Items accepted:
BUMC will be collecting items from the congregation every Sunday during Lent (Ash Wednesday is February 17) until March 21, 2010. BUMC Community MealsVolunteers needed March 11 and 27 to help serve Community Meals at BUMC. We will host two Community Meals during Lent. Volunteers are needed to help set up, cook, and or clean up. The meals will be open to anyone in the community, and we expect 200-300 people to attend. Community Meals are hosted each month by a different Barrington church, and attendance has grown, given the difficult economic times. Contact Sydney Whitley with your availability for the 3-6 shift or the 5-8 shift, or sign up on the chart in the Narthex. Can You Provide a RideHelp! A couple of church members need rides to and from church on Sunday mornings. Both live in or near the village. Could you help us out occasionally? For more information and details call Carol Svoboda. Thanks. Traveling Tea PartyThe Member Care arm of the Membership Ministry has started a Traveling Tea Party. On the third Tuesday of each month we will go out in pairs to call on shut-ins from our church. Our next visits will be made on January 19th. We'll begin by meeting in the church parlor at 1:00 p.m. We will choose a partner and the name of a shut-in to visit and pick up a basket containing the tea party. From there we will travel, as a pair, to the home of the shut-in, prepare a cup of tea and visit with him or her for 45 minutes or so. In November we made our first visits and now are eager to get started on a monthly schedule. For more information, if you would like to be part of our tea parties, or if you have the name of someone who would enjoy our visit please call Carol Svoboda. Please join us, the more visitors we have the more calls we can make. Prayer MinistryNew Prayer Request Box! A large new wood Prayer Request box is now on the Welcome Table. Special thanks to Bob Vickery for handcrafting this box. Cards are near the box for all prayer requests. Please help us encourage all ages to submit requests. The prayer ministry will joyfully pray the requests for 30 days. Box Tops Help Noah's ArkYou can help earn cash for Noah's Ark Christian Preschool. Among those products are:
Look for a complete listing of products on a sheet that will be available for you at the Welcome Table. Mission to Feed the HungryOn the 3rd Saturday of each month, BUMC's "Mission to Feed the Hungry" prepares a meal in Humboldt Park. Everyone interested is encouraged to sign up in teams of about 4 for one of the months. There are "openings" starting in May. It only takes about 1 hour of shopping the day (Friday) before (charged to our account), 2 hours of easy, Saturday afternoon round-trip driving (leaving about 2 p.m.), 1 hour of preparation of the meal on-site, 1 hour to serve the meal (starting at 4:00) and done with cleanup by 5:15. All information you need on shopping lists, menus, and detailed instructions are provided. There are already 17 couples who are experienced and who can team with you. For more information or to sign up, please email Bill and Julie Perry to let them know which month you would like. Humboldt Park CookiesPlease remember that BUMC volunteers will be purchasing and preparing meals at Humboldt Park United Methodist Church on the third Saturday of each month. You can play a critical role in this effort by making a batch of cookies and bringing them to the church by the preceding Wednesday. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. Is Our Church in Your Will?Stewardship and the BUMC Endowment Fund In recognition of planned gifts to the Church that members of the congregation have arranged, an honor roll is under development. The honor roll will include those church members and friends who have designated in their wills a charitable gift from their estate to the Barrington United Methodist Church upon their deaths. If you have made a designation similar to this, please contact Norval Stephens at 847-382-1588 to discuss adding your name to this roll honoring your stewardship decision. Gifts for which there is no specific designation will become a part of our Endowment Fund. There are a number of methods to make these gifts. One of these is the Gift Annuity which can be undertaken at any time. It might consist of highly appreciated securities. If stocks have been owned more than one year, then the gift of the donors would be calculated not just on their original cost, but also on any "paper profit" present in the gift. As an approximate example for a 65 year old person in a 28% Federal income tax bracket, a Charitable Gift valued at $10,000 would provide an annual annuity for life of $600 (of which $352 would be tax free). In addition a charitable tax deduction of $2,991 would be applicable when the gift annuity is established. Upon the death of the beneficiary, the balance of the gift annuity would become part of the BUMC Endowment. Additional information is available on the Northern Illinois Conference United Methodist Foundation web site. Tanzania Orphanage ProjectThrough a friend, Joyce Strout has learned of an orphanage in Tanzania that would appreciate summer weight baby clothing for ages birth up through toddler and small children sizes. She plans on sending a charity box each quarter to Tanzania that will include clothing, medical supplies, and other supplies for basic living. For more information, contact Joyce Strout. Collect Campbell's Soup LabelsDon't forget to save Campbell's UPC codes for Marcy Newberry. Over 100,000 UPS codes were sent by the Northern Illinois Conference UMW. They are redeemed for items such as books, playground equipment, computer software and other items needed by Marcy Newberry. It's an easy way to help! Just cut out the UPC codes from Campbell's products (soups, gravies, pork and beans, etc.) as well as those from Pepperidge Farms, Swanson and Franco American brands. PLEASE NOTE: No longer are we turning in the front labels, now we need the UPC codes from the back of the label. Thanks for your help and participation! Food Donations ExpandYou can now bring donations of food to BUMC at any time. Place non-perishable items in the baskets and blue containers in the Narthex at your convenience. Members of the Church and Society Ministry will deliver them to the FISH Food Pantry in Carpentersville twice a month. This is a time of great need. Additionally, it is a wonderful way to teach youngsters about the need to share the gifts God has given to us. EventsEmployment MinistryThe BUMC Employment Ministry provides a Christian forum for men and women who share a common desire to become re-employed, to help others become re-employed, or to understand methods of increasing economic security in times of unemployment. Meetings are the second Saturday of each month from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. Come join us for a unique opportunity to network and learn more about your fellow members of the BUMC family. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the office or Scott Badskey.
Christian beliefs and fellowship guide this ministry's meetings, actions and processes. The primary purpose is to prepare each participant to face the challenges of a new job search and to shorten the time of unemployment, but the hope is also to provide emotional support to those facing stress and uncertainty in the difficult time of unemployment. Prayer and meditation on God's word are integral parts of each meeting. Holy Week for ParentsParents, do you wonder about how to talk to your children about the events of Holy Week and Easter? Do your kids ask tough questions about Jesus' arrest, death or resurrection? Do you want to be equipped to tell your children the story of Easter? Join us on Sunday, March 14 at 9:15 a.m. in the Dining Room for a conversation led by Pastor Cynthia Anderson about how to talk about these events that are so central to our Christian faith. Come with your questions. Handbell ConcertThe Annual Barrington Area Festival Handbell Concert is set to take place at Village Church of Barrington on Sunday, March 14 at 7:00 p.m. In keeping with the tradition of past years, this concert will have something for everyone. Music will span many genres -- from the beat of a South African freedom song to the hallowed sound of some of our most beloved hymns. Eight bell choirs totaling more than 100 ringers will be participating. Choirs will perform individual selections and will play several songs en masse. Make plans now to attend this much anticipated concert. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Village Church is located at 1600 E. Main St. Barrington. This is a free concert. United Methodist WomenThe March General Meeting will be Thursday, March 18 at 11:00 a.m. in Fellowship Hall. The program,"Easter," celebrates the gathering of the women at the tomb, and uses that gathering as an example of a discipleship call to mission and creation of a beloved community. It will focus on how fear is keeping us from answering God's call to act in mission with the world. Lunch will be served after the program. Please join us for this time of fellowship! Child care is available upon request; contact Linda Osikowicz. There will be a UMW Board meeting on Thursday, March 18 at 9:30 a.m. Spring Clothing SaleHopefully, soon, cold weather will be followed by a beautiful spring! Think ahead and when you start pulling spring and summer clothing items from the depths of your closet, set those aside you no longer need for the 5th Annual Spring and Summer Clothing Sale! The sale will be April 16 and 17, with drop off beginning April 11. We would appreciate your donations of any spring or summer winter clothing, shoes, accessories, swimwear, coats, jackets, hats, jewelry, etc. (Please, no heavy winter clothes--we try to limit this to spring and summer wear.) Get Ready for Derby DayIt is time to start planning for the Fellowship Ministry's Annual Derby Day Progressive Dinner. It will be held, Saturday, May 1st, 2010. We start at one home for Appetizers and watch the Kentucky Derby together. Then we'll separate into smaller groups at other homes for salad and main course and then all meet again at another home for dessert. We need people to offer their homes for Appetizers, Main Course or Dessert. Other people who attend will either co-host, or bring an appetizer or dessert.
