This Week at BUMCJuly 18 - July 25, 2010 This week's announcements "Loving God and loving neighbor require that we receive the love God has given us in Jesus Christ – we love because God first loved us. If we don’t take time to receive that love, to be in Jesus’ presence, then we don’t have anything to give. Now once we’ve received that love we dare not hoard it – it must be shared in service to our neighbors."

Looking AheadCentering ThoughtI always look forward to summer, escpeically the month of July. For many years July has signaled vacation, a time way from the busyness of being a pastor. While I love to preach and find the sharing of God's Word the single most important aspect of my ministry, I also appreciate time way from the rigors of weekly sermon preparation. This year, however, is different and may signal a change with which I must contend for a few years. Mary Beth is in summer school for three weeks and when that is over she is in volleyball camp for three weeks. There is an intrusion on my beloved July and time on the shores of Donnell Lake, boating, swimming, relaxing etc. Now it will be a weekend here and there and then perhaps a week or so. As I thought about this, I realized it is something of a parable. Summer offers perhaps a different pace but not an escape from being a disciple. I have found over the years that even in Michigan or wherever we vacation, I inevitably find myself doing pastoral work. Perhaps it is offering comfort to someone who is grieving, or answering theological and biblical questions, or maybe intervening in a family struggle. I think God enjoys the summers too. But I am glad God does not take a vacation. So I am thankful that Mary Beth's new life as a freshman at BHS is causing dad to rethink how God recreates and refreshes life. |
