This Week at BUMCJuly 6, 2008 - July 13, 2008 This week's announcements "If there is anything I have learned in thirty plus years as a pastor it is that this struggle within is a reality for most people, and maybe for all Christians. It is simply a reality that each of us must contend with. We inevitably confront the mystery of not doing what we know is the right thing to do, the good thing, even the faithful thing to do, and instead do what we know to be wrong." Looking AheadCentering ThoughtI found the many tributes paid to Tim Russert quite interesting. He was a man of many accomplishments. Highly regarded his peers for his intelligence and thorough work, admired by both friend and foe for his integrity and fairness, acclaimed by many for his keen political analysis, beloved by his family and friends for his care and solid values, Russert's life was one to be celebrated. He came a long way from Buffalo, New York and being the son of a sanitation worker. What, we might ask, allowed Tim Russert to accomplish so much? I think it had do with how his life was grounded. Russert was a devout Roman Cathoic, a committed Christian, and a man of a deep and abiding faith. Educated by the Jesuits, Russert learned a life perspective that was anchored in the gracious love of Jesus Christ. That perspective was integral to all he did. St. Paul reminds us in the sixth chapter of Romans that we are called to live by grace, in fact he says we "have been set free from sin that we may become slaves of righteousness." The righteousness of which he speaks is that rightness with God made possible by the grace received in Christ Jesus. Both Tim Russert's life and Paul's nudge us to ask, "What is the driving force of our lives?" It is a question worth pondering. July 13th Scripture Reading |
