This Week at BUMCJune 28, 2009 - July 5, 2009 This week's announcements "In other words, what has happened in these stories, a woman healed from a 12 year illness and a 12 year old girl raised from the dead, is a sneak preview of a coming attraction. It is a prelude to Easter, a prefiguring of the salvation coming in the death and resurrection of Jesus, a glimpse of the power of God’s gracious love healing the broken, raising the dead, bringing new life to the faithful. Every healing is a sneak preview, a reminder that there is a power at work in the world stronger than the power of death."

Looking AheadCentering ThoughtThe season of Pentecost is the longest of the liturgical seasons of the Christian year. It lasts from the fiftieth day after Easter until the first Sunday in Advent, which is four weeks before Christmas. This means that Pentecost is celebrated on well over half the Sundays of the year. And this is, I believe, for good purpose. At the heart of the Pentecost season is the gift of the Spirit which is the source of life for the Christian community. So during the days of Pentecost, we are learning what it means to live in the Spirit. Such a life is the central focus of the Christian life. We are called to consider our spiritual gifts, those gifts of grace that equip us to serve and witness and live the life of a faithful disciple. Likewise, we are called to assess our faithful living by what might be called "the fruit test." In Galatians, Paul lists those fruits of the Spirit that are to be evident in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Now wonder Pentecost is such a long season. There is much for us to do as we contend with the Spirit and its gracious presence. May we be faithful and fruitful. July 5th Scripture Reading |
